WebQuest Project

Description: For this project, we were required to create a WebQuest that applied to our discipline.  We used www.wordpress.com to create a web page that had our students explore the web to meet a goal.  We were encouraged to edit the appearance of the web page, use pictures, and attach any worksheets or scoring rubrics for the students to be able to use.

Reflection: I enjoyed this project much more than I anticipated.  I have never created a website as detailed as this, and thought it would be more difficult than it was.  Also, I was concerned with the WebQuest itself.  I wasn’t sure I would find a project that I would actually use in my classroom.  My WebQuest activity included students finding graphing calculator applications online and evaluating each of them.  After finishing the project, I realized that I would definitely use this in a classroom.  I think that the project teaches the students some great skills that anyone would use in almost any job or career.  I was very pleased with the outcome of this project, especially since I didn’t expect it to be useful, and it   was.

Description: This project was a collaborative presentation.  We were to create a Microsoft Power Point presentation that we could use as an instructional aid.  We were required to make it visually appealing using pictures and links to the web.

Reflection: I worked with another math teacher.  We created slides that showed the connections of mathematics to what we see as beautiful.  We used many appealing pictures and a link to a video on YouTube.com that showed a slow motion video of a skateboarder doing a trick.  Overall I really liked this presentation as I am visual person.  We peer evaluated on this project and I enjoyed seeing other students’ ideas.

Mircosoft Excel Project

Description: In this project, we were required to create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that we could use to aid instruction.  We were required to have a chart of some kind and use a formula.

I made an Excel sheet that would aid in instruction of cumulative frequency histograms.  I would use this in my Integrated Algebra classes.  However, this could be used at any level that this topic is taught.  It provides an introduction in what a cumulative frequency histogram is and compares it to a regular histogram.

Reflection: I think that this will be a very helpful visual aid for my students when I teach this topic.  I do not use Excel often, but this project was a success.

Microsoft Word Project

Description: For the Microsoft Word Project, we had to write a lesson plan using Microsoft Word.  We were required to use certain styles and include a clip art file or picture and use specific text wrapping.

I created a lesson plan for a music classroom that incorperated mathematics for my school’s interdisciplinary lesson requirement.  This would be appropriate for any music classroom, or could be modified for a mathematics classroom as well.

Reflection: This was an easy project for me since I use Word very frequently and have typed up lesson plans before.  I am also very familiar with entering clip art and pictures into Word.  I struggled more with coming up with a  lesson itself than actually typing it up.

Overview of your perception, reflection, and consideration based on your experiences on this class.

My experience in this class was great.  Harrison created a relaxed, yet productive environment where we were able to create activites that we could immediately use in the classroom.  I find that I learn the most from classes in which I actually create something that I could use in my classroom.  He gave realistic timelines to work on our projects.  We worked collaboratively as well as individually on various projects.  We were given the opportunity to peer evaluate our projects.  There were many aspects of this class that made it enjoyable and productive.
